Structured prediction models are used in these tasks to take advantage of correlations between co-occurring labels and visual input but risk inadvertently en-coding social biases found in web corpora. WEAT on popular corpora matches IAT study results.

Abstract. Machine learning is a means to derive artificial intelligence by discovering patterns in existing data. Here, we show that applying machine learning to ordinary human language results in human-like semantic biases. We replicated a spectrum of known biases, as measured by the Implicit Association Test, using a widely used, purely statistical machine-learning model trained on a standard corpus of text from the World Wide Web. tics derived automatically from language corpora contain human-like moral choices for atomic choices. and public discourse: AI systems “have the potential to inherit a very human flaw: bias”, as Socure’s CEO Sunil Madhu puts it1. AI systems are not neutral with respect to purpose and society anymore. Semantics Derived Automatically from Language Corpora Necessarily Contain Human Biases Aylin Caliskan-Islam, Joanna J.
